Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin today inaugurated Tata Motors’ new passenger vehicle manufacturing facility in Ranipet, marking a major milestone for India’s automotive sector. The project represents an investment of US$ 991.84 million (approximately ₹9,000 crore) and formally places India on Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) global manufacturing map, alongside the UK, Austria, China, and Brazil.
Speaking at the inauguration, Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran stated that the facility is expected to have an annual production capacity of 250,000 to 300,000 vehicles, covering both Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and Electric Vehicle (EV) platforms. The Land Rover Evoque was the first model produced at the approach-to-launch site, highlighting the plant’s readiness to manufacture premium vehicles.
The expansion is expected to have a significant economic impact on the region. According to T.R.B. Rajaa, Tamil Nadu Minister for Industries, the project will generate around 5,000 direct jobs and spur strong growth in ancillary industries around Ranipet. He noted that Tata Group has already established a strong presence in Tamil Nadu through subsidiaries such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Power, and Tata Electronics, further strengthening the state’s industrial ecosystem.
In addition to employment generation, the new facility will contribute to workforce development through collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation, helping create a sustainable talent pool for advanced automotive manufacturing. The project also supports India’s ambition to emerge as a global exporter of high-end luxury vehicles, strengthening domestic production capacity and positioning the country as a potential global centre of excellence for premium automotive manufacturing.
Summary
The inauguration of Tata Motors’ ₹9,000-crore passenger vehicle plant in Ranipet marks India’s formal entry into JLR’s global manufacturing network. With a planned capacity of up to 300,000 vehicles annually, job creation for around 5,000 people, and a strong focus on EVs and skill development, the project reinforces India’s growing role in the global premium automotive value chain.
