Larsen & Toubro’s Transportation Infrastructure division has bagged a prestigious project to construct a landmark cable-stayed bridge over the Muri Ganga River in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. This ambitious development aims to establish a dependable and seamless road link to Sagar Island, a destination of both strategic and cultural importance for the state.
Project Features and Technical Scope
Under this contract, L&T will develop a 3.2-km long, 2+2 lane extradosed cable-stayed bridge with a maximum span of 177 metres. The project also includes the construction of approach roads stretching approximately 0.9 km from the Kakdwip side and 0.65 km from the Sagar Island side, ensuring smooth access at both ends.
To enhance safety and traffic flow, the bridge will be fitted with modern traffic management systems. A sophisticated bridge health monitoring system will be installed to continuously assess structural performance. Aesthetic architectural lighting, hybrid street lighting, and complete road furniture will further elevate both functionality and visual appeal, making the bridge a signature infrastructure landmark for the region.

At present, Sagar Island is primarily dependent on ferry services, which are often interrupted during rough weather and tidal conditions. The upcoming bridge will offer uninterrupted, all-season connectivity, remarkably easing travel for the island’s population of over two lakh residents.
